Beware of social media job scams! Fake job offerings are being sent to people of all ages in the form of a text, email, and social media message. The scammers are targeting young people with a healthy following on social media, seniors, and anyone actively looking for work. If you happen to receive a job offer that you weren’t expecting, delete it, or send it directly to your spam folder without clicking the link.
If you are currently seeking new employment, use common sense to weed out the scams from what could be a true offer. Remember, a high-paying job opportunity won’t just land in your lap. To get a job you must first apply for it then get an interview. You may need to interview for the position on more than one occasion. To finalize the job, you would do so over the phone, via zoom, or in person at the office with the HR director. Legitimate job offers are not made via text, email, or social media message.
Other social media job scams involve pyramid schemes. Fake companies use social media pages, videos, and ads to trick people into paying frees for recruitment-based opportunities. If you agree to one you will be responsible for selling the product and recruiting others to recoup your original fee and turn a profit.
To avoid getting taken advantage of or having your personal or financial information stolen online, remember the golden rule. If it sounds too good to be true it probably is. Parents should discuss online safety with their child and remind them to never click any links sent via text, email, or social media message, ever.
